Haplogroup E1b1b testing

Haplogroup E1b1b(*) - defined by the marker M35 - appears to have originated in East Africa, but has been carried from there to the Near East and then on to North Africa and Europe. Today it is most common in the horn of Africa, North Africa, the Near East and around the Mediterranean. One subgroup decreases in frequency from SE to NW Europe consistent with a dispersal mediated by the arrival of farmers in the Neolithic period, beginning 10,000 years ago.

*Haplogroup E1b1b was formally known as E3b

EthnoAncestry offers three testing options for haplogroup E1b1b:

  1. The E1b1b Subgroup Test
  2. The E1b1b1a Subgroup Test
  3. Custom Select SNPs

E1b1b Subgroup Test

This product tests M35, the marker which defines the E1b1b group (strictly E1b1b1, as 2 Ethiopians have been found with the M215 marker, but not the M35 marker) and the most important downstream markers. This product will be of interest to those who have strong evidence (from SNP or STR markers) that they belong to the E1b1b group

  • V13 is the most common subtype of E1b1b found in Europe and indicates descent from Near Eastern farmers in the Neolithic period.
  • V32 is a marker of East African ancestry, and is commonly found in Ethiopia and Somalia.
  • V12 and V22 are also found in Europe, but are rarer than V13 and also found in N Africa and E Africa (V22).
  • M78* chromosomes originate in NW Africa, although movement to Italy has brought small numbers to Europe.
  • M81 is a marker of the indigenous Berber people of North Africa, and has spread across the Straight of Gibraltar and to Southern Italy
  • M123 and M34 are present on a lineage which originated in the Near East, but spread to East Africa and also to Sicily.

The full list of SNPs tested in the E1b1b subgroup test is as follows:

M35, M78, M81, M123, M34, M281, M165, V12, V13, V22 & V32.

You will receive an official certificate depicting the results of your testing.

*Note that not all these Y-SNPs are tested in every person, M78, M81, M123 and M281 are tested first, then depending on which is positive, the appropriate downstream Y-SNPs are then tested.

E1b1b1a Subgroup Test

This product tests the most important markers downstream of M78, the marker which defines the E1b1b1a group. If a sample is negative for these markers, M78 is tested to assign to E1b1b1a*. This product will be of interest to those who have strong evidence (from SNP or STR markers) that they belong to the E1b1b1a group.

  • V13 is the most common subtype of E1b1b1a found in Europe and indicates descent from Near Eastern farmers in the Neolithic period.
  • V32 is a marker of East African ancestry, and is commonly found in
    Ethiopia and Somalia.
  • V12 and V22 are also found in Europe, but are rarer than V13 and also found in N Africa and in the case of V22 in E Africa.
  • E1b1b1a* chromosomes originate in NW Africa, although movement to Italy has brought small numbers to Europe.

The full list of SNPs tested in the E3b subgroup test is as follows:

V12, V13, V22, V32, M224 & M78 if required.
