Haplogroup J testing
Haplogroup J is believed to have originated in West Asia. Today haplogroup J is spread from South and Central Asia to North Africa and Europe. Haplogroup J is most common among populations in Arabia and the Near East, and is even found commonly in Ethiopia. In Europe haplogroup J is much more frequently found in Mediterranean peoples. Both J1 and J2 are also common among Jewish populations; the Cohen Modal Haplotype is within the J haplogroup.
This product will be of interest to those who have strong evidence from previous DNA testing (from Y-SNP or Y-STR markers) that they belong to haplogroup J.

EthnoAncestry offers two testing options for haplogroup J:
- J Subgroup Test
- Pick your own SNPs cafeteria style
J Subgroup Test
This product tests M304, the marker which defines the J group and the most important downstream markers.
- M267 defines haplogroup J1, which is common in Arab populations and among Jews.
- M172 defines haplogroup J2, which in Europe is a marker of the Neolithic farmers who spread from the Fertile Crescent beginning 10,000 years ago.
- M410 defines the major subgroup of M172 (haplogroup J2a) , which also spread from the Near East to India.
- M67 (defining haplogroup J2a1b) is also a marker for the Near Eastern farmers in Europe.
- M92 (defining haplogroup J2a1b1) may be a marker of the Bronze Age expansion from Greece across the Mediterranean.
- M102 (defining haplogroup J2b1) is common in the Balkans and North Italy, but the history underlying this affinity is unknown.
The full list* of Y-SNPs tested in the J subgroup test is as follows:
M304, M172, M267, M365, M367, M368, M369, M410, M12, M102, M241, M47, M68, M158, M67, M92, M166 & M340.
You will receive an official certificate depicting the results of your testing.
*Note that not all these Y-SNPs are tested in every person, M172 and M267 are tested first, then depending on which is positive, the appropriate downstream Y-SNPs are then tested, and this process continued at each stage of the tree.
