Haplogroup R1b
R1b (or R1b1c in the ISOGG nomenclature) is the most commonly observed haplogroup in individuals of European descent. R1b reaches a frequency of over 90% in parts of Iberia and Western Ireland and decreases eastward towards the Near East, although is present in parts of Central Asia. R1b is considered a marker of Palaeolithic European hunter-gatherer ancestry.
These products will be of interest to those who have strong evidence from previous DNA testing (Y-SNP designation or 10+ STRs) suggesting they belong to the R1b haplogroup.
We suggest you examine the R1b tree before you order one of these tests. If you would like to read more on the R1b subgroups try here. We are always ready to answer any of your questions so please do not hesitate to contact us!

EthnoAncestry offer you four testing options to help assign you to one of the subgroups of R1b. They are:
R1b "The Works"
This product tests the entire set of markers downstream of the Y-SNP defining the R1b1c group (i.e. M269). This includes P25 which defines R1b1, M269 which defines R1b1c and 12 additional Y-SNPs including:
- The four new "S Series" Y-SNPs (S21, S26, S28 and S29) placed on the Y-chromosome tree by EthnoAncestry. These Y-SNPs define R1b1c9, R1b1c9a, R1b1c10 and R1b1c9b respectively.
- M222 which EthnoAncestry discovered defines an important Irish lineage - R1bC7.
- SRY-2627 (defining R1b1c6) - which is a marker specific to Iberia, but has recently been found in samples from western Britain, perhaps indicating a movement of people along the Atlantic coast in the Iron age or later.
- S21 (definining R1b1c9) is the most common subgroup of R1b and includes the "Frisian" group of R1b.
- S29 (defining R1b1c9b) is a marker for the pre-Anglo-Saxon inhabitants of England.
- S28 (defining R1b1c10) is the second most common subgroup of R1b in Europe.
- P66 (defining R1b1c11) about which little is known other than it has been observed in Italy.
To assist you we have generated a map of R1b S21 and S29 frequencies in Europe.
The full list of Y-SNPs tested in R1b "the works" is as follows:
P25, M269, M37, M65, M126, M153, M160, M167 (SRY2627), M222, P66, S21, S26, S29, S28 and S68.
You will receive an official certificate depicting the results of your testing.

R1b FT upgrade
If you have tested with another company but want to ensure that all relevant R1b markers are completed this is the product for you. Why upgrade? Because the most informative (and common) Y-SNPs in R1b are in the S-series. S21 is more common than many other European haplogroups put together.
The list of SNPs tested is as follows:
S21, S26, S28 and S29.

Haploview S-series upgrade
About half of the complete series of R1b markers are included via Marligen multiplex testing as sold by EthnoAncestry and Relative Genetics. To complete your R1b subgroup testing, we are offering the S series SNPs bundled with M160, M222 and P66 bringing you to the level of our R1b "the works" product. Why upgrade? Because the most informative (and common) SNPs within R1b are in the S-series, available here at EthnoAncestry. M222 is also more common than the SNPs tested in the multiplex.
The complete list of SNPs tested is as follows:
S21, S26, S29, S28, M160, M222 and P66.

R1b Human Genome Project Donor SNPs
EthnoAncestry is pleased to announce the release of a new research SNP product for R1b customers.
Y chromosome comparison of two individuals who have recently had their genomes sequenced (Jim Watson and Craig Venter) has revealed that they both belong to the S21+ group first identified at EthnoAncestry. When their Y chromosome sequences are compared to that of the reference sequence used for the human Y chromosome (which is an R1b sequence, but neither S21+, nor S28+), they share a large number of SNP differences from the reference donor.
Here we are offering the chance to test four of these SNPs. We have verified these SNPs are not on the branch leading to S21 or equivalent to the recently discovered SNPs S127, S128 and S129. These SNPs must be on the branch leading to the human genome project donor (under M269).
A graphic representation of the preliminary positioning of these SNPs is available here.
It is possible these R1b markers are very rare, and limited to the human genome project donor's family. However EthnoAncestry are hopeful that at least one of them will identify a significant new subgroup of R1b.
If you would like to test these research SNPs for your own curiosity and to further our understanding of the substructure of the R1b group, we invite you to order the R1b Human Genome Project Donor SNPs
The complete list of SNPs tested is as follows:

Order the R1b Human Genome Project Donor SNPs - Bonus offer!
Order the Human Genome Project Donor SNPs together with three markers (S127, S128 and S129) recently shown to have occurred on the lineage between M269 and S116 (and S21) in the Y chromosome tree and get a 20% discount on the standard price of 39USD for each for these markers. S127, S128 and S129 are ancestral outside R1b, and derived in most of R1b, but a few early branching lineages are also ancestral for these markers, apparently more commonly in the South East of Europe.
