Mitochondrial DNA testing

Haplogroup H subgroup testing

This test is a refinement to tests of your maternal lineage, that of your mother’s mother’s mother’s people. There are a large number of different mtDNA lineages and groups of lineages, but haplogroup H is by far the most common in Europe, accounting for over half the lineages in some areas. This test allows a bearer of haplogroup H to discover which of 31 recently discovered subgroups of group H he or she belongs to. You must first have tested the first hypervariable region of the mtDNA (e.g. with EthnoAncestry’s mtDNA test). EthnoAncestry then genotypes a number of coding region markers to define the various subgroups. H3 for instance spread out after the last glacial maximum from the refuge in Iberia, and H1 shares a similar history, H2a on the other hand is more common in Eastern Europe and H5 reaches its peak frequency in the Caucasus Mountains. A number of group H mtDNAs are not within any of the described subgroups and so are labelled H*.

As these subgroups were discovered so recently in many cases there is little known about their origin and distribution. Thus there is no interpretation included with the results. Customers are instead pointed to the following three references which describe the subgroups:

Loogvali et al. (2004) Molecular Biology and Evolution 21:2012-2021.
Achilli et al. (2004) American Journal of Human Genetics 75:910-918.
Pereira et al. (2005) Genome Research 15:19-24.

After submitting your saliva sample we will extract your DNA and genotype the coding regions markers in your mtDNA. You will receive a certificate in pdf format identifying your subgroup.

This test can be run on DNA from males and females!
